Long-term Issues Solved By Dental Implants

Dental implants are an effective solution for long-term issues

Missing a tooth can cause a host of oral and general health problems. When you lose a tooth it’s important to replace the tooth as soon as possible.

The longer you leave the gap, the more problems can arise. When a tooth is missing the teeth on either side will shift in an attempt to fill the gap. This can cause problems such as misaligned bite and gum disease.
Tooth loss also causes bone loss in the jawbone—in order for a Bruce Stevens Dental dentist to be able to surgically insert a dental implant there needs to be adequate bone. If there isn’t adequate bone it means either a dental implant procedure cannot take place or you’ll need a bone graft.

Gum disease is also a major issue. The higher levels of bacteria caused by gum disease have been linked to a variety of health issues such as: stroke, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease and even cancer.

Tooth loss can also cause further tooth loss…

When you lose a tooth, that causes bone loss and gum disease. Bone loss and gum disease can cause tooth loss—it is, if not treated effectively, a circular problem.
You can do something about this. Don’t wait until you’ve lost a few teeth, instead replace your first missing tooth and seek advice from a qualified dentist about maintaining your oral health.

Dental implants at Bruce Stevens Dental…

Dental implants replicate your tooth root. You see, when you lose a tooth the bone that is responsible for holding the tooth root starts to dissolve. By having an implant inserted, it bonds with your jaw bone, strengthening the jaw and acting as a root for a dental crown that will be attached to the dental implant.

At Bruce Stevens Dental we use Nobel Biocare implants—these are the world’s most popular implant technology. Once the implant is surgically inserted into your jaw it will take some time for your jaw to heal—once the implant and your jaw have bonded this creates the sturdy foundation for a dental crown.

Using the CEREC machine, we can create your dental crown in one day. So once your jaw has healed it’s just one more appointment to restore your smile back to proper function.
Our principle dentist has a special interest in dental implants; he has taken an advanced Masters course specifically on the treatment of dental implants.

If you associate the dentist with pain we can help you with that…

At Bruce Stevens Dental in Cairns we offer pain-free solutions. Some of our patients while appreciating the importance of their oral health would rather not be in pain when sitting in the dental chair. That is why we use the latest in anaesthesia. The anaesthesia we use has a low impact on your health while still being very effective in treatment to minimise treatment.

It is our goal to make our patients as comfortable as possible—that is just one of the reasons why we offer pain-free solutions for treatment.

Five Year Wait for Public Dental Care Worse After Axing of Chronic Disease Dental Scheme

UP TO 400,000 people are waiting up to five years to see a public dentist and the problem is getting worse after the closure of the Commonwealth’s Chronic Disease Dental scheme.

A parliamentary inquiry into dental care has been told a young disabled person who was receiving dental care every four months under the CDDS now faces a two year wait to see a public dentist.

Another patient who missed out on Medicare funded dental care because the scheme was axed is in “constant agony” and walks around “looking like a circus freak” because they can’t get public dental care.

The CDDS was providing $4250 of dental treatment a patient over two years to more than one million people with a chronic disease before it was axed by the Gillard Government to fund a dental scheme for kids late last year.
The committee acknowledges the problems caused by the closure of the scheme but supports its axing and says a $345 million funding injection for public dental care should have meant these people are able to access dental services more quickly.

The report has also found a severe shortage of dentists in South Western Sydney means residents in these suburbs have the same difficulty accessing a dentist as someone living in rural NSW.

Despite a huge waiting list for public dental care the report says just 13.3 per cent of the nation’s dentists work in public practice and the dental workforce is not growing at a rate to meet demand.

By 2020 there will be a shortfall of 800-900 dentists and two million Australians will miss out on care, the report says.

Already the problem is acute in rural areas and some suburbs of major cities.

While there are 59.5 dentists per 100,000 head of population in major cities there are just 33 per 100,000 in inner regional areas and 17.9 in remote areas.

The report says in South Western Sydney there are only 32 dentists per 100,000 people, a similar level to rural towns.
This compares to the 88 dentists per 100,000 in the eastern suburbs of the city.

The Association for the Promotion of Oral Health told the committee:
“The maldistribution of the workforce between these two highly populous parts of Sydney reflect the fact that despite high clinical need, there is simply not enough money in South Western Sydney to support more private dental practices.”

The report, released today says NSW has frozen its spending on dental care for the past five years.
The committee says the states should be required to maintain their current dental spending to get access to $345 million new Commonwealth dental money.

It wants the states to pay private dentists to help clear public dental waiting lists, says dental hygienists and therapists should get their own Medicare provider numbers and be able to work independently. source

Pregnancy and Dental Work

Pregnancy and dental work questions are common for expecting moms. Preventive dental cleanings and annual exams during pregnancy are not only safe, but are recommended. The rise in hormone levels during pregnancy causes the gums to swell, bleed, and trap food causing increased irritation to your gums. Preventive dental work while pregnant is essential to avoid oral infections such as gum disease, which has been linked to preterm birth.

What about other regular dental work during pregnancy?

Dental work while pregnant such as cavity fillings and crowns should be treated to reduce the chance of infection. If dental work is done during pregnancy, the second trimester is ideal. Once you reach the third trimester, it may be very difficult to lie on your back for an extended period of time.
The safest course of action is to postpone all unnecessary dental work until after the birth. However, sometimes emergency dental work such as a root canal or tooth extraction is necessary.
Elective treatments, such as teeth whitening and other cosmetic procedures, should be postponed until after the birth. It is best to avoid this dental work while pregnant and avoid exposing the developing baby to any risks, even if they are minimal.

What about medications used in dental work during pregnancy?

Currently, there are conflicting studies about possible adverse effects on the developing baby from medications used during dental work. Lidocaine is the most commonly used drug for dental work. Lidocaine (Category B) does cross the placenta after administration.
If dental work is needed, the amount of anesthesia administered should be as little as possible, but still enough to make you comfortable. If you are experiencing pain, request additional numbing. When you are comfortable, the amount of stress on you and the baby is reduced. Also, the more comfortable you are, the easier it is for the anesthesia to work.

Dental work often requires antibiotics to prevent or treat infections. Antibiotics such as penicillin, amoxicillin, and clindamycin, which are labeled category B for safety in pregnancy, may be prescribed after your procedure. source
